Is Bonneville Still Being Represented?

  Is that Bonneville or Hillcrest on the field? This is a question many students attending Bonneville High School have been wondering during this fall football season, as many have noticed the difference in color of their team’s football uniforms. The football jerseys are no longer a grassy green, rather a smoky black with a small amount of green filling the gold number outlines. There have been rumors that this uniform style was inspired by Hillcrest High School; however, those rumors are entirely incorrect. The simple fact is that green is a harder color to come by because it is less common and less practical; therefore, black was a financially wise choice for the team.
  Some may have observed that the football team was able to afford uniforms last year and wonder why currently it is unaffordable. According to Tyler Johnson, the BHS Athletic Director, each sport takes turns with money that is automatically provided by the school board; this year’s money was granted to another group instead of the football team. To receive funding, the players were required to either pay around $160-200 or find a generous benefactor. The team found a wonderful donor and are currently being sponsored by the Rockwell Homes Company. If the team had not found Rockwell Homes to sponsor them, players who were unable to purchase their uniforms would have been unqualified to play. Rockwell also pays for their white uniforms, which are for away games. This color arrangement—black uniforms for home games and white uniforms for away games—is used in professional football as well as high school.
  Along with the new uniforms, the football helmets have a special addition honoring an extremely special character. There is a medium-sized, white-outlined, black sticker in the shape of the French Fleur-de-lis. When the French colonized the New Orleans area of Louisiana, the floral symbol became associated with that new town. This sticker is to honor the late Assistant Coach Bryan Lampard who grew up in New Orleans and moved to Idaho Falls. After retirement, he realized he missed the game and decided to coach the Bonneville team. As the boys in black head onto the field, each of them carry a small memento to give it their all and put the “team over me,”as their shirts say.
