A new club for the sport ultimate frisbee has been started at Bonneville High School by Mr. Davis (room 104), an experienced coach of the sport. Ultimate Frisbee is a lesser known, typically 7-on-7, teamwork based sport that builds endurance, coordination, and stamina. The club is welcome to anybody and has no required equipment.
The club's first meeting was on March 4th. The meeting consisted of eating pizza, watching Ultimate Frisbee, and discussing times along with additional information relating to the club. The club meets for practice every Wednesday from 4 to 6 p.m.…  and eventually the club plans to compete against other schools. Ultimate Frisbee is a non-contact sport where the teams score points by throwing the frisbee to teammates on the opposite side of the field. Mr. Davis explains that for the club’s first actual practice the team is learning how to throw and catch a frisbee as well as discussing the basic rules of the game. That is the main focus until all the players become familiar with the basics, he adds, “If you can’t throw the frisbee, we can’t play frisbee.” Another crucial part of the practices are the stretches, specifically stretches involving leg muscles because of how much running is involved in ultimate frisbee: “I have stretches that isolate each of the different muscles in your legs and we'll stretch each one.” The stretches also are meant to prevent potential leg injuries and keep all players safe
There is no equipment required to participate in the club, however a high quality pair of running shoes or cleats is recommended. Along with there being no required equipment, the club welcomes everybody , Davis states, “We don't turn anybody away there's no tryouts and so we've trained people that have never played a sport in their life.” Davis wants the club to be a friendly place where people can try ultimate frisbee, something new to a majority of students, and gradually improve over time while feeling like a team.
Davis has quite a bit of experience with both playing and teaching ultimate frisbee. When he was younger, he would play ultimate frisbee with his friends. Later on in his life his passion for the sport grew as in his junior year of college he joined a competitive ultimate frisbee team. Eventually the previous captain of the team stepped down, and Davis was selected to be the new captain, “Without warning to me [he] just said all right you're in charge now. And so I was like, okay, cool. I guess I'm leading practice.” Davis has remained the captain of that team for the past year and a half and even competes against teams in Utah and Boise.
All in all the new ultimate frisbee club offers numerous opportunities for bonding with others, becoming more athletically active, and providing new experiences as a whole. If you are interested in joining the club, stop by Davis’ classroom (104) and talk with him about potentially joining.
