Staff Writers Drink shops have popped up all around Idaho Falls, although one unique place stands out from the crowd. Betty’s Boba is a bubble tea and waffle truck located on 1st street near Planet Doom. It is owned and operated by Shaunna Becker, Collin Becker, Abigail Freeman, and others. Open from 11:30 a.m. to 7 p.m. Tuesday through Saturday. Betty’s Boba offers a unique and delicious experience of bubble tea and Thai-inspired food. The Bonneville Buzz were incredibly lucky to interview Shaunna and Collin Becker and know more about this small family business. 28-year-old Collin Becker was the primary influence for opening a boba truck. Collin explained how he found his desire to bring boba to Idaho Falls. “I was sitting at a Thai restaurant three years ago; people were coming in, and they were just getting bobas… I thought that’s something I need to fill, have a mobile place where you can get food but dedicated to boba.” With his mother, Shuanna Becker’s financial support, Collin learned how to make boba, researched the electrical aspects of a food truck, and eventually built their trailer. Collin installed almost everything in the trailer. Without his dedication and help from his family, his dream of opening a boba truck may not have been feasible. Abigail Freeman, daughter of Shaunna Becker, designed the catchy name Betty’s Boba to appeal to younger generations. More importantly, the title references their family dog nicknamed “Betty,” who fell ill with Canine Parvovirus as a young puppy and nearly passed from it. Shaunna stated how the name is genuinely sentimental, “We almost lost her [when she was a puppy], so she’s become something really special to us.” The meaning behind the name truly adds sentiment to this business. Shaunna described how for a long time, it was just her and her children at home. She has been a single mom for 12 years and has worked with special needs individuals for 14 years. She even adopted special needs children. However, She decided to do something different when her kids brought up opening a boba truck. She hopped onto the idea and assisted her kids through every step. She stated that she has had many great experiences and wants to support her kids the best way she can. From experience, this is an exceptional place to visit and hang out. The owners are incredibly kind and genuinely motivated. They are trying their best to get this business up and running. The boba and food are delicious and a great way to try something new. We will be revisiting them. When looking for an enjoyable and unique place to grab a drink or snack, The Buzz wholeheartedly recommends Betty’s Boba.

Staff Writer A new sandwich shop, Jersey Mike’s Subs, opened in Ammon on August 11, 2021. Each new location that the franchise opens partners with a charity; this one supports The Burn Foundation, an organization that provides free assistance to burn victims. The local Jersey Mike’s is located at 2681 East Sunnyside Road. In the store, a customer can order dine-in or takeout. Curbside pickup is available on the website and app, and delivery is available in most areas. The restaurant is open seven days a week from 10 a.m. to 9 p.m. Jersey Mike’s offers a broad array of sandwiches, wraps, salads, and sides. When ordering, first select a sandwich; there is a wide range of subs to choose from, including Turkey and Provolone, Tuna Fish, The Original Italian, Chipotle Cheesesteak, and BLT, among others. Once the customer selects a sandwich, there are many sizes to choose from. The mini is five inches, the regular is seven inches, and the giant, which feeds four, is 14-15 inches. Aside from subs, they can be made as wraps or in a keto- and gluten-friendly “Sub in a Tub,” where all the toppings are in a salad-like bowl with lettuce. Prices range from about $5 for the mini to $15 for the giant, although it depends on the sandwich. When I tried Jersey Mike’s, I ordered online and scheduled a time for pickup. I arrived to find the sandwiches were not ready. The restaurant was fairly busy, and the meal was ready almost 30 minutes after the scheduled pickup time. The staff was accommodating by providing my family with two complimentary fountain drinks. This was a nice gesture, but it did not make up for the fact that the hot subs were only warm when we arrived home. I would recommend the Chipotle Cheesesteak sub, which comes with freshly grilled steak, onions, peppers, white American cheese, and chipotle mayo. It is not overly spicy but definitely has a kick. If you are looking for a cold sandwich, try the Tuna Fish or The Original Italian. The tuna fish salad is made fresh every day and is paired with tomatoes, lettuce, chopped celery, and mayonnaise; The Original Italian has provolone, ham, prosciuttini, cappacuolo, salami, pepperoni, tomatoes, and lettuce. All subs are customizable with options to add, remove, or substitute certain ingredients. Overall, Jersey Mike’s Subs are made with quality ingredients and bread baked fresh on location every day. Prices are higher than the average sandwich shop, but they are much better quality. While it will be delicious, preparing the food may take longer than expected, so plan ahead! Visit the Jersey Mike’s Subs website, https://www.jerseymikes.com/ to view the menu, find a location, and place an order. |
