Staff Writer The Renaissance club is a group at Bonneville High School (BHS) that rewards students that have fantastic grades and take them for enjoyable activities during school hours. Lori Baldwin, who is known for her role as the Hope Squad advisor, is the current teacher for the group and has been for a bit now. Baldwin first started as just an assistant for the primary Renaissance teacher, Travis Mitchell. After Mitchell stopped being the advisor, Baldwin took over and has directed the group since. In order for students to join Renaissance, they need to fill out a permission form, maintain a 3.0 GPA, and get a teacher recommendation. At the beginning of the year, Baldwin selects the club activities, then she asks the class which one they would like to do. Once accepted into the club, students have the opportunity to participate in a variety of activities to reward their diligence. Baldwin stated that “Renaissance clubs in high schools originated from the Jostens Renaissance Program.” This program is a nationwide initiative used to promote academic achievements from students and excellent behavior from the students. BHS has been taking these places for a decent bit now and has no plan on stopping. Since the beginning of the year, students in Renaissance have gone to the bowling alley, to a trampoline park, and to the movies. While the requirement to enter the club may be demanding, many students would agree that the reward is worth the effort required to join.
