Lunch at Bonneville High School is filled with a variety of choices. Some students prefer staying at lunch, or going off campus. A study was conducted, and some students had the chance to answer a survey about BHS lunch choices. Out of the 82 students that answered the survey, 28 of them said they bring lunch from home, and eat at school. 21 of them say they get food from school. The students that do go off campus chose Mcdonalds, or the Maverick gas station. The average student who go out to eat admit that they spend on average about $5-$10
The students of Bonneville High School say that they rarely go out to lunch off campus. Those who stay at the school eat their favorite meals such as mandarin orange chicken, the pasta bar, italian dunkers, and pizza. The students do explain that they would like to see more fresh fruit, and more hot lunches in the cafeteria of BHS. More students state that they stay at school for lunch or go home. With the portion that do go off campus to eat lunch, they state that out of the 97 responses only 19 eat lunch off campus every day. 30 students say that they rarely eat lunch off campus. Two people admit that during lunch they do stay at the school, but they choose to get items from the vending machines most days.
The cafeteria at BHS can be a fun environment to eat lunch with friends at school, although some students say they would like to have more food options for lunch. A majority of the changes that students would like to make to improve the lunch on campus would have to be longer lunch times. Students explain that even just ten extra minutes of lunch time can improve the organization of the lines. Students explain that within 10 minutes the lines can be less stressful, and not as crowded in the lunch room.  With all the different food options for the students at Bonneville, students can mostly focus on spending their lunch breaks with friends or just a needed break in their busy schedules.

BHS Welcomes New Algebra Teacher with Relationship Focused Approach

The Math Department at BHS welcomed a new Algebra 1 teacher at the beginning of the school year. The name of the new teacher is Mckeyan Howell. Howell previously taught Economics at Idaho Falls High School.  Howell also used to coach football at Bonneville; however, this is Howell’s first year actually teaching at BHS.
Howell’s main goal for teaching at Bonneville is to, “make sure that a majority of the students hate math a little less.” He wants to make math tolerable for those who used to hate it and hopefully some will end up loving it. One of the ways Howell hopes to achieve this goal is by trying to build relationships with the students: “I try to build relationships first of all with the students [be]cause I think that is the best way to get them on your side so that they want to learn.” Math challenges students due to the mental concentration required and the abstract nature of equations. To help with these struggles, Howell tries to add characters or terms the students are more familiar with to the math problems and examples so they can better understand and relate to them. When asked how he keeps the students immersed in class, Howell explained, “I try to do a lot of examples…I work out the problems with the students, and I think it kinda builds a sense of community and a sense of unity.” By building a sense of community, it becomes easier for students to not only care about math, but to be able to focus on the math during class. To further build community and help students focus in class, Howell often engages with the students by having the class solve the math problems together. He hopes that he can utilize technology as well to help the students engage by passing an iPad connected to the projector to the students and have them write the next steps of an equation. Despite switching to an entirely new school, the change was relatively smooth for Howell as he explains, “It’s cool that over here that there is a culture of hard work.” Howell also describes his appreciation of the PRIDE matrix and how it builds respect throughout the BHS community. Overall, Howell has many plans to build community in his classroom, to keep students engaged in class, and to make math a bit more enjoyable for those who dislike it.

New Bonneville Staff Members: Ready To Make a Change

This year, like every year, the new staff has so much to offer. When it comes down to it, they are ready to start up and have a positive mindset on their classes and how they will teach each one. This specific new staff member Trevor Povey is a freshly graduated college student who teaches Honors History and U.S. History that always brings a positive mindset. He really wants to be able to teach his students history while also helping them “learn to be people.” He currently has set bellworks and inspirational videos to help students progress into this mindset with his favorite reason of, “I’m here to help you become a person, not some historian.”
Povey had begun his year thinking he was going to come into an empty classroom with nothing except for his desk and the student’s desks. However, he was quickly surprised when he walked in to see bookshelves and a filing cabinet. Povey, who took over Mr. Strobel’s position after accepting an administrator job at Rocky Mountain Middle School, explained that he was left behind plenty of supplies. He then finished his explanation by saying, “I feel like the admin has been very supportive in terms of getting stuff.” After being asked what was something he knew before coming into this school, Povey talked about how he wished he knew the school culture since it is hard to gauge before starting. He further explained that this is in terms of student involvement with sports, extracurriculars, and school spirit. He loves the energy, but if he knew about it before starting, it would have helped him in knowing what the school was like.
Further into the interview, Povey explained that he loves the engagement in class and having discussions whether it is during the lesson or at the end of class. However, there was one major thing he had to change within the class to adapt to his students. The major change he made was “the seating chart,” he explained.  At the beginning of the school year, the seats were set up in rows on either side facing the center. Most students loved the seating chart, but it proved to be too much after the constant chatter. As a compromise, Povey switched the desks to a more traditional setup; rows. Most of the students loved the new seating arrangement, but some still did not. So, to try and overcome this, Povey wants to switch the desk arrangement again next trimester to make sure all students enjoy it. Another thing Povey hopes to do next trimester is find a way to keep an organized lesson plan system that has more flexibility and feels less robotic. He would like to have lesson-related activities as well as in-class discussions that allow the students to talk without talking out of turn.
At the end of the interview, Povey was asked what advice he would give to another new teacher. He followed this with, “I would say, don’t stress the little things because they will work themselves out at some point. There’s bigger fish to fry every single day.” He then finished with, “pick your battles, whether that’s with a cellphone or one of thirty students who might not be super engaged in your class.” Povey hopes to also spread the message that this school has such amazing staff members and to never be scared of asking for help whether that is to new teachers or even just other students.

BHS Plans: Major A Wing Renovation

Bonneville High School (BHS) administrators have decided it is time for some changes within the school, specifically, changes in the A wing. The changes are planned to commence in June of 2026 and the school hopes to finish by August of 2027.

BHS plans to add several temporary classroom trailers outside of the school where A wing will be doing their classes while the changes happen. Some trailers have already been added to the exterior of the school. Principle Jolly was asked what the changes are going to be; he stated, “The entirety of A wing is going to be torn out and fully redone.” This plan is just now being put into action, but talk about these renovations have been happening for about three years. The school's main goal for these changes is safety. As of November 21, 2025, the only way to access fire escapes in BHS is to go through a classroom. This makes the fire escapes very cramped for all students to exit through. The school plans to add several more of these fire escapes around A wing to make them more accessible. The next plan for the changes is to add more science labs to the school. The school currently only has one “lab” which is the chemistry room; however, they can not use a lot of chemicals in the rooms because of safety precautions. As a way to fix this problem, the school is going to add more science labs. This should give students a better experience in the Chemistry and Biology classes. The A wing currently holds English, Science, History and a few elective classes. These classes will go to the many trailers outside of the building. The students will be outside in the trailers for the entire 2026-2027 school year. The changes hope to be complete at the start of 2027-2028’s school year, but problems can arise. The renovations have raised questions among students. Some of the questions include are they going to do the same to the rest of the school? Or to the exterior? Jolly notes, “There is currently no plan to change the rest of Bonneville." The current plan is only for A wing; the rest of the school will remain the same as it has been. BHS students should be able to return during the 2027-2028 school year, with new science labs and safer classrooms for all.
